Milan captain Paolo Maldini has welcomed suggestions that Andriy Shevchenko could be on his way back to the Rossoneri, according to Setanta Sports.

The Ukraine star has failed to impress at Stamford Bridge following his £30 million transfer in the summer of 2006 and has scored only eight goals in 41 Premier League appearances.

After being relegated to the club’s reserves recently, there have been suggestions that a return to Milan could be on the cards for a player who scored a much more impressive 127 goals in 208 Serie A games.

And Maldini, who could well postpone his retirement and play another season at San Siro, would certainly welcome his former colleague back with open arms.

“At Milan there is always space for those who have done a lot,” explained Maldini. “There is always room for those who have left a mark on the club’s history.”

Midfielder Massimo Ambrosini also feels that Shevchenko would be a useful addition to a team that has lost Ronaldo to a long-term knee injury.

“We cannot decide these things,” said Ambrosini. “I can only say that Sheva is a friend and that we will welcome him with enthusiasm if he were to leave London.”
