Ukraine beat neighbours Poland 1-0 in a friendly dominated throughout by the home side on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Poland Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was kept busy but it was not until the second minute of first-half stoppage time that young midfielder Serhiy Kravchenko beat him with a header after a Serhiy Nazarenko cross.

The win for Ukraine, now trained by Olexiy Mikhailichenko after Oleg Blokhin was sacked because of Ukraine`s failure to qualify for the Euro 2008, follows success against Sweden in a friendly in June.

It was also the debut of Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Anatoly Tymoshchuk as captain of the Ukrainian side, taking over from Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko, who sat out the first half.

Poland qualified for Euro 2008 form but failed to win a match and bowed out at the group stage.

The match was watched by 23,000 spectators at the Lvov stadium, one of the four Ukrainian venues for the 2012 European championship that the country is co-hosting with Poland.

Poland and Ukraine have been criticised by the European soccer body UEFA for slow progress in preparing for the championship.
